Carving through the Scottish Lowlands, the recently restored Forth & Clyde and Union canals are linked by the awesome Falkirk Wheel. It is from the basin below the wheel that your holiday begins, heading either through the Wheel and east to Edinburgh or travel West to Glasgow .
A mobile phone is a must to pre-book passage through the locks and bridges, which are all manned by British Waterways Staff.
Visit either city in a short break or both in a week.
If you prefer not to drive, budget airlines fly into either Edinburgh or Glasgow, with train or coach connections to Falkirk .

Considered some of the best countryside on a canal route, the Kennet & Avon canal also passes straight through the middle of a number of towns. Being a broad beam canal for its entire length means companionable lock sharing throughout your holiday.

Wrenbury base occupies a delightful wharf on the outskirts of this quiet Cheshire village. A few miles from our Whitchurch base and again set on the ever popular Llangollen Canal .
The Llangollen Canal skips along the Welsh Border before heading towards the stunning landscape of the foothills of Snowdon.
Often narrow and winding, this contour canal has few locks, but progress is at a stately pace.
