Routes

3 night short break:

Heading south out of the Wharf offers you a lock free trip that takes approximately 8 hours. A taste of the Brecon National Park mixed with the civilization of Pontypool and Cwmbran .

A midweek 4 night break:

Follow the route above as far as Talybont on Usk . If you are looking for a lock and tunnel free route turn around before you reach the first lock at Llangynidr and retrace your steps back to the marina.

One week trip:

Enough time to cruise all 36 miles of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal with time to spare to explore some of the stunning backdrop. The canal in its heyday of the 1820's saw 72,000 tons of rocks and coal carried by boat each year, but now the tranquil and idyllic setting of the canal offers all that you would expect – locks, aqueducts and a tunnel. As the canal meanders north from Goytre it passes through or near numerous rural Welsh villages; Pencroesoped, Llanellen, Llanfoist , Govilon , Gilwern , Llangattock and Ffawyddog . As you leave Llangynidr you will go through five of the six locks on the canal, shortly afterwards you will pass through Ashford Tunnel from here it is only a mile or so on to Talbont on Usk a great place to moor up and do some walking. From Talybont it is only a short distance on to Pancelli through Brynich Lock then onto Brecon where the canal comes to an abrupt stop outside Brecon Theatre and five minutes walk from the town centre. Here you will need to retrace your steps back to Goytre Wharf , if there's time why not continue past the wharf to Cwmbran or Pontypool at the other end of the canal.
